This QuickBooks version is not supported

QuickBooks on this computer is too old for the connection, or it is an edition the connection does not work with.

What you see

The app shows:

This version of QuickBooks Desktop is too old to connect. Update QuickBooks Desktop, then try again.

During setup, the title is “This QuickBooks version is not supported”. The app’s support team may see the code 0x80040404, 0x80040423 or 0x80040428.

Why it happens

The connection speaks to QuickBooks in a format that older releases do not understand. It needs:

  • QuickBooks Desktop Pro, Premier or Accountant 2018 or later
  • QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise from about 2014 on
  • a US edition

Canadian, UK and other non-US editions use a different version of that format, so they do not work even when they are recent. QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks Point of Sale are separate products and do not work with this connection.

You can also see this error when several QuickBooks versions are installed and the Web Connector opens an older one.

How to fix it

  1. Check your version. In QuickBooks, press F2 to open the Product Information window. It shows the product name, the year and the release.
  2. If the year is too old, upgrade QuickBooks Desktop to a supported release. See Upgrade QuickBooks Desktop.
  3. If the year is supported, install the latest release update for it. In QuickBooks, choose Help › Update QuickBooks Desktop.
  4. If more than one QuickBooks version is installed, remove the ones you do not use. See Keep one QuickBooks version installed.
  5. If you use a non-US edition, the connection cannot work with it. Tell the app’s support team.

How to check it worked

After the upgrade, open the company file in the new version and let QuickBooks update it. Approve the app again if QuickBooks asks. Then try the action in the app, or click Check again during setup.

Contact them if your version is on the supported list and the error continues. Send the time, the exact message, and a screenshot of the Product Information window.
