Desktop Accounting API

A QuickBooks feature is off or the action is not available

The app asked QuickBooks to do something that your company file or QuickBooks Desktop itself does not allow. The connection is fine. Only this one action did not happen, and nothing was changed in QuickBooks.

The app shows one of these messages:

This feature is not turned on in QuickBooks Desktop.

This action is not available for QuickBooks Desktop. Please contact the application provider.

The feature is turned off. Some QuickBooks features only work after the Admin turns them on for the company file, such as inventory, multiple currencies, sales tax, classes or units of measure. Some need a particular edition. For example, inventory sites need Advanced Inventory, which comes with QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise.

The action is not available. QuickBooks Desktop lets connected apps do most things, but not everything. A few actions, such as voiding some kinds of transactions, can only be done in the QuickBooks window. No connected app can do them.

If the message says the feature is not turned on:

  1. Ask the app’s support team which feature the action needs, if the app does not say.
  2. Sign in to QuickBooks as the Admin.
  3. Go to Edit > Preferences, choose the preference for that feature (for example Items & Inventory or Multiple Currencies), and open the Company Preferences tab.
  4. Turn the feature on, then select OK. Some preferences, such as multiple currencies, cannot be turned off again; read the QuickBooks message before you confirm.
  5. Try the action in the app again.

If your edition does not include the feature, the app cannot use it with this company file. Ask the app’s support team whether it can work without it.

If the message says the action is not available, do that action in QuickBooks yourself, or ask the app’s support team for another way. Trying again does not help.

Repeat the action in the app. It goes through, and the change shows in QuickBooks.

Contact them if the feature is already on and the message keeps appearing, or if you are not sure which feature the action needs. Send the time, the exact message and what you were trying to do.
