QuickBooks Web Connector error codes

The QuickBooks Web Connector numbers its messages QBWC1000 and up. You see them in the Status column of the app’s row, in a pop-up window, or in the Web Connector log, C:\ProgramData\Intuit\QBWebConnector\log\QWCLog.txt. This page lists every code Intuit documents, what it means in plain words, and where to go next.

Most codes are followed by more text, often a message from QuickBooks itself. That text usually tells you more than the code. When a page here asks you to send details to the app’s support team, send the time, the full message and the QWCLog.txt file.

These codes describe something you clicked, or a normal reply. They do not mean the connection is broken.

Code What it means What to do
QBWC1016 You clicked Update Selected without ticking any app. Intuit’s message: “No application was selected for update.” Tick the box to the left of the app’s name, then click Update Selected.
QBWC1018 You clicked Select All while no app was in the list. Add the app’s connector file first. See Connect QuickBooks Desktop.
QBWC1019 You clicked Select None while no app was in the list. Same as QBWC1018.
QBWC1020 You chose Exit while an app has Auto-Run on. The Web Connector warns that scheduled updates stop if you exit. See The Web Connector warns about scheduled jobs when you exit.
QBWC1031 Intuit describes this as an update that finished with an error during a scheduled run. With this app, the Web Connector also logs it every time the app replies that it has no work. On its own, ignore it. See The Web Connector log is full of QBWC1031 entries.

The Web Connector could not open a session with QuickBooks on this computer. Intuit lists the most common causes as QuickBooks not running, no company file open, or a QuickBooks window waiting for an answer.

Code What it means Where to go
QBWC1007, QBWC1008, QBWC1009 Connecting to QuickBooks failed during an update. The Web Connector tries twice. QBWC1009 means the first try failed and someone clicked Cancel instead of Retry. QuickBooks could not be started and A QuickBooks window is blocking the connection
QBWC1013 “Error connecting to QuickBooks.” QuickBooks refused the connection during an update. The message from QuickBooks follows the code. QBWC1013: Error connecting to QuickBooks
QBWC1022, QBWC1023, QBWC1024 Connecting to QuickBooks failed while the Web Connector was adding the app’s connector file. Open QuickBooks and the company file as Admin, close any open QuickBooks windows, then add the connector file again. See Connect QuickBooks Desktop.
QBWC1053 A window is open in QuickBooks and blocks every connected app. A QuickBooks window is blocking the connection
QBWC1014, QBWC1021 QuickBooks answered, but the Web Connector could not read the reply about its company, preferences or version. Restart QuickBooks and the Web Connector. If it happens again, send the details to the app’s support team.
QBWC1015 The update finished, but the Web Connector could not close its session with QuickBooks cleanly. If QuickBooks then refuses to close the company file, see QuickBooks says the company file is being used by another application.
QBWC1034 The Web Connector could not set up the QuickBooks component it talks through. Intuit points to a damaged installation of that component. Unable to cast COM object
Code What it means Where to go
QBWC1039 “There was a problem adding the application.” The second line tells you which problem. Only the Admin can grant first access or Unique OwnerID/FileID pair value required
QBWC1025, QBWC1026, QBWC1027 Something went wrong while the Web Connector looked up or wrote the app’s ID into the company file. Intuit notes that QBWC1026 can mean the ID is already in use. Unique OwnerID/FileID pair value required
QBWC1011, QBWC1032 The Web Connector’s list and the app entries it saved in Windows are out of step. Uncheck Auto-Run, exit the Web Connector and start it again. If the app’s row is still missing, see The Web Connector shows an unhandled error.
QBWC1088 “Company file do not match. Cannot remove this application.” The open company file is not the one the app was added to, so the Web Connector will not remove it. Requests stop working after restoring a backup and A different company file is open
Code What it means Where to go
QBWC1030 No password is saved for the app. Password not set
QBWC1040 The saved password was rejected. Invalid password
QBWC1038 The Web Connector asked for the key that unlocks its saved passwords, and the window was closed or the entry was wrong. Enter the password again. If you do not have it, see Lost password.
QBWC1028, QBWC1029 The Web Connector could not encrypt or decrypt a saved password. Enter the password again. If it keeps happening, see Web Connector password problems.
Code What it means Where to go
QBWC1012 The Web Connector’s sign-in call to the server failed. QBWC1012: Authentication failed
QBWC1041, QBWC1042 Sending a request or receiving an answer failed, often a timeout. QBWC1041 and QBWC1042: Send or receive failed
QBWC1043, QBWC1044, QBWC1045 Another call between the Web Connector and the server failed. Check the computer’s internet connection, then see QBWC1041 and QBWC1042: Send or receive failed.
QBWC1036, QBWC1046 The version check at the start of an update failed. Send the details to the app’s support team.
QBWC1037 The app answered the version check with a message, usually asking you to upgrade the Web Connector. Follow the message. See Upgrade the Web Connector.
QBWC1048 The Web Connector could not verify the server’s certificate. QBWC1048: Could not verify the server certificate

These codes mean the connector file (.qwc) is not one the Web Connector accepts. A connector file from a setup link does not cause them. If you see one, ask the app for a new setup link and use the connector file it gives you.

Code What it means
QBWC1000 The server address and support address in the connector file are on different domains.
QBWC1001, QBWC1002 An address in the connector file is a bare IP address instead of a name.
QBWC1003, QBWC1004 The support page named in the connector file could not be reached.
QBWC1010 The connector file points to an address without HTTPS.
QBWC1035 The connector file points to localhost, which is meant only for an app’s own testing.
Code What it means Where to go
QBWC1005, QBWC1006 The Web Connector failed to start. Intuit’s usual cause is that it could not create its log file or folder. QBWC1085: Problem with the log file
QBWC1033 The Web Connector could not open QWCLog.txt and will not run. The file may be read-only, the folder missing, or the disk full. QBWC1085: Problem with the log file
QBWC1085 The log file is damaged or missing. QBWC1085: Problem with the log file
Code What it means What to do
QBWC1017 Lists the apps that did not finish when several updated at once. Look at each app’s own row and its Status column for the reason.

Intuit’s list does not include these two, but the Web Connector shows them, and our pages cover them:

Contact them when a code points you to them, or when the page for your code did not fix it. Send the time, the full text after the code, a screenshot of the Web Connector window with the app’s row visible, and QWCLog.txt.
