# The company file cannot be found

> Fix errors 0x80040403, 0x80040416 and 0x80040417 when QuickBooks cannot open the connected company file at its saved location.

The connection remembers where your company file lives. QuickBooks went to that location and could not open the file there.

## What you see

The app shows:

> QuickBooks Desktop could not find the company file. If it was moved or renamed, open it in QuickBooks, then try again.

The app's support team may see the code `0x80040403`, `0x80040416` or `0x80040417`. During setup, the title is "QuickBooks could not find the company file".

## Why it happens

- The company file was moved to another folder, drive or server.
- The file was renamed.
- A mapped network drive letter changed, or the drive is not connected after a restart.
- The server or shared folder that holds the file is off or unreachable.
- The file was deleted.
- QuickBooks was closed and no file location was available to open.

## How to fix it

1. On the computer that runs the Web Connector, open QuickBooks Desktop and open the company file the usual way, with **File › Open or Restore Company** or the recent files list.
2. Leave the file open, then try the action in the app again. If the file is still in its usual place, this is often enough.
3. If QuickBooks cannot open the file either, check that the drive or server holding it is reachable. Open File Explorer and browse to the folder. Reconnect any mapped drive that shows a red X.
4. If you moved or renamed the file on purpose, keep it at its new location and ask the app's support team to reset the stored company file path. Then open the file in QuickBooks on this computer. See [Fix a moved, renamed or restored company file](https://www.desktopaccountingapi.com/docs/help/guides/moved-or-renamed-file/).
5. If the file was deleted, restore it from your most recent backup. A restored backup of the same company keeps working with the connection.

## How to check it worked

Close QuickBooks, wait a minute, then use the app. If the action works, the Web Connector can open the file in the background. If you prefer to keep QuickBooks open, check that the app works with the file open. In setup, click **Check again**.

## When to contact the app's support

Contact them if you moved or renamed the file, or if the file opens fine in QuickBooks but the error continues. Send the time, the exact message, the full folder path and file name of the company file, and a screenshot of the app's row in the Web Connector window.
