# QuickBooks denied access to the app

> Fix errors 0x80040420, 0x8004041A and 0x8004041D by allowing the app again in QuickBooks Integrated Applications preferences.

QuickBooks knows about the app but is not letting it in, or is not letting it in while nobody is at the keyboard. The fix is a setting in QuickBooks preferences.

## What you see

The app shows:

> QuickBooks Desktop has not allowed this connection. In QuickBooks, open Edit > Preferences > Integrated Applications and allow access for this application.

During setup, the title is "QuickBooks has not allowed access". The app's support team may see one of these codes:

| Code | What it means |
| --- | --- |
| `0x80040420` | Someone answered **No** in the Application Certificate window. |
| `0x8004041A` | The app's access to this company file was turned off. |
| `0x8004041D` | The app is allowed, but not to sign in on its own when nobody is signed in to QuickBooks. |

## Why it happens

- During setup, someone chose **No** in the **Application Certificate** window, or closed it.
- Someone chose a one-time option instead of **Yes, always; allow access even if QuickBooks is not running**.
- An Admin later unchecked the app or removed it in **Edit › Preferences › Integrated Applications**.
- The QuickBooks user picked under **Login as** was deleted or made inactive.

## How to fix it

1. On the computer that runs the Web Connector, open the company file in QuickBooks and sign in as **Admin**.
2. Choose **Edit › Preferences**, then **Integrated Applications** in the list on the left, then the **Company Preferences** tab.
3. Find "{App} via Desktop Accounting API" in the list.
   - If it is there but unchecked, check the box in the **Allow Access** column.
   - If it is missing, it was removed. Close preferences and follow [QBWC1039: Only the Admin can grant first access](https://www.desktopaccountingapi.com/docs/help/connection-errors/admin-required/) to approve it again.
4. Select the app and click **Properties**.
5. Check **Allow this application to read and modify this company file**.
6. Check **Allow this application to login automatically**, and under **Login as**, choose the QuickBooks user the connection should use. This is the option that lets updates run when QuickBooks is closed.
7. Leave the option about accessing personal data, such as Social Security numbers, unchecked. The app does not need it.
8. Click **OK** twice to save.

## How to check it worked

Close QuickBooks, wait a minute, then use the app. If the action works with QuickBooks closed, automatic sign-in is allowed. During setup, click **Check again**.

## When to contact the app's support

Contact them if the app is allowed in preferences and the error continues. Send the time, the exact message, a screenshot of the app's **Properties** window in Integrated Applications, and a screenshot of the app's row in the Web Connector window.
